TWELVE

Stupid.

Dana held herself stiff, trying to keep the cold blade of the knife from slicing into the delicate skin at her throat.

These guys were immensely stupid if they thought she would surrender so easily. If they thought she was a weak woman who would go down without a fight.

Not. Going. To. Happen.

Her gaze met Rich’s. He hesitated, an unreadable look in his eye, then dipped his head in a quick nod.

Yep. Everyone was in place.

Rich split the air with an ear-piercing whistle.

As he did, Dana raised her foot and brought it down hard on her captor’s instep. She drove her elbow into his diaphragm and stepped backward hard against him as his grips on her and on his knife loosened. Then she shoved his arm away, and the knife clattered to the ground. Drawing her pistol, she stood over the man just out of leg’s reach and held him at bay.

The scene devolved into controlled chaos. Rich dived at the shorter guy to his right while Javi leveled his weapon on the unarmed man to Rich’s left. In seconds, both were subdued.

Like clockwork.

The man on the ground before her glared with a gaze that could melt diamonds as he cursed her entire family.

She wasn’t sure which family. Dana kept her face impassive. “On your stomach.”

For a second, he acted as though he wasn’t going to comply. Dana lifted the pistol so it aimed right between his eyes.

That seemed to supply the proper motivation. As efficiently as she could in the narrow space between vehicles, she zip-tied his hands and ankles with the restraints Javi had provided and stepped back.

The other two assailants were likewise restrained on the ground behind the cars.

In the distance, sirens wailed.

Javi held his pistol over the men and cast a quick look at Dana. “You two get out of here. Mom and I will make sure the cops handle these three.”

Dana was already backing away, but Rich hesitated. “They won’t ask questions?”

Javi smiled. “Mom once trussed up two would-be armed robbers and had them in custody before the call ever went out to the police. They won’t ask too many questions. Besides, these are my people. I’ll take care of this, and I’ll be sure to do a thorough interrogation once we get them booked. You get out of here.”

Dana tapped Rich on the shoulder. “Let’s go.” If the police showed up, Dana and Rich would be tied up all night answering questions. Right now, their only known pursuers were subdued. Given time, more might descend on Oswego and bring war with them. She wanted to get the information from her mother’s gym locker and leave town before that happened.

In the back garage, she unlocked the blue-and-white Ford pickup and climbed into the driver’s seat, then narrowly made it out of the parking lot before the police arrived. It was all she could do not to shove the gas pedal to the floor. Never had time been such a precious commodity, not even on the many missions she’d been involved with during her WitSec field days.
